Film Description:

On August 25, 1968, a group of seven people gathered on Red Square in Moscow to protest the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact troops. Their demonstration lasted only 5 minutes before they were forcefully removed and detained. These 5 minutes of freedom in the main Soviet square cost them years in prisons and mental institutions. The filmmakers bring together the surviving protagonists of the Red Square protest with the new generation of fighters for democratic rights in present-day Russia. The film follows the dedicated young activists of the opposition movement – the modern dissidents willing to make real sacrifices when life in a democratic society is at stake.

Opening remarks by Dmitri Glinski.  The film will be introduced by Kirill and Ksenia Sakharnov via Skype.

Pavel Litvinov, one of the organizers and participants of the 1968 rally and a hero of the film, Board Member of The Andrei Sakharov Foundation, is expected to speak at the event.

Американская русскоязычная правозащитная ассоциация (АРПА) приглашает вас отметить вместе с нами День памяти жертв политических репрессий (неофициально известный как День политзаключённого) 30 октября показом и обсуждением документального фильма Кирилла и Ксении Сахарновых “Пять минут свободы”.  Фильм посвящён участникам демонстрации 25 августа 1968 г. на Красной площади против вторжения советских войск в Чехословакию и подавления “Пражской весны”.  Мы проводим эту встречу совместно с Гарримановским институтом, в помещении которого и состоится мероприятие.

    В числе выступающих ожидается участие Павла Литвинова, одного из организаторов и участников демонстрации 1968 г. и героев фильма, члена Совета директоров Фонда Андрея Сахарова.
